Roger Corbett Elementary School, an at-risk school named for a former
Reno Host Lion was adopted by our club in 1991. Activities which
are part of the Lions Adopt-A-School program include:
- Student of the Month: Each month, a Roger
Corbett student is named by the school principal and honored for his/her scholarship
and good citizenship at a Lions Club meeting. Each student receives a T-shirt
and memento.
- Reading Mentors: Lions volunteer many hours
for reading to classes, while some have undertaken a more critical role to
act as role models and mentors for children through the mentor program.
- Flag Day: Lions present American flags and
communicate their love of our country to students in Lions Flag Day ceremonies
in February.
- Soccer Team: Lions have coached the Roger Corbett
soccer team for a number of years teaching citizenship as well as soccer.
- Games Day: Lions volunteer their time to
assist in the games and serve a gourmet hamburger lunch to all the students
of Roger Corbett.
- Junior Achievement: Lions teach lesson programs
emphasizing business and the American free enterprise system. A highlight
is preparation for job interviews and techniques for seeking employment.
